In 2006, a talented cyclist, triathlete and physiotherapist, Adam Smiddy, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanoma. This remarkable young man was the epitome of kindness and strength but within just six months, had passed away from the disease.
To honour his good mate, Mark “Sharky” Smoothy and his two mates, cycled from Brisbane to Home Hill, Adam’s home town, in his memory and pay tribute to an incredible athlete and friend.
What started as a humble memorial ride has grown to a series of epic cycling and triathlon events across the country. 12 years on, more than 53 events have taken place with more than 2,400 athletes all working together to raise more than $8 million for cancer research.
In that time, Smiling for Smiddy has funded game-changing projects including the Queensland Melanoma Collaborative, which brings together experts across the state, as well the Smiling for Smiddy Cell Cycle Research Group, spearheaded by Professor Brian Gabrielli.
Alpha Sport has been a proud long-standing partner of Smiling for Smiddy ensuring the athletes are safe on and off the road. From providing road crew support to the sporting materials needed to keep the riders upright, to our very own Wayne Messer taking part in the New Zealand and Far North Qld rides, we are truly proud to support such an incredible group of athletes in the community.
